"I used to have this girlfriend known as Elsie, with whom I shared four sordid rooms in Chelsea." - Cabaret
Inspired by the titular song of the musical Cabaret, A Friend Named Elsie was a deconstructed musical theatre performance using over 40 live performers, a full band, video, and snacks. How can we take apart songs of the American musical theatre cannon and put them back together to say something new? How can a song typically sung by one person be sung by an entire community?
The production is part of an ongoing series of works continuing to deconstruct American musical theatre.
