Nolan Boggess is a theatre director and professional who is obsessed with the musical, bizarre, and temporary aspects of the performing arts.
Originally from Des Moines, IA, Nolan grew up in a household that worshipped musical theatre. When he was two, he asked for the VHS of Cats the musical for Christmas
(his taste has since changed) and never looked back. Constantly participating in and experiencing theatre, Nolan set his sites on a way to make the temporary art form of theatre a permanent staple in his life.... and to get out of Iowa so he never had to see The Music Man again.
Nolan earned his BA from Grinnell College in Theatre and Dance in 2019. At Grinnell, Nolan focused his training in performance art and site specific performance. He worked on immersive performance for an audience of one with Riverbed Theatre in Taiwan and created a site-specific environmental prairie labyrinth with collaborators from the UK. He devised multiple productions at Grinnell and won the McClennon Clark Playwriting Award in 2018.
Nolan also created a student musical theatre program at Grinnell. As a first year student, he got a few upperclassmen together to produce theThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. After the production was a great success, Nolan decided to pursue his passion of directing and direct and immersive production of Godspell the following year. For his final research project at Grinnell, he directed Spring Awakening. Over four years, Nolan grew the musical theatre program from twenty students to over one hundred students.
While at Grinnell, Nolan completed various internships including a production internship at Urbandale Community Theatre (Iowa), a marketing and administration internship at The Space Arts Centre (London), and a general production internship at The Public Theater (NYC). After working on the 2018 Shakespeare in the Park season for The Public, Nolan was asked back to work on the experimental Under the Radar Festival. While in the audience for one of the festival's show, the New York Times took a very unflattering picture of Nolan... look that up if you want.
Nolan recently served as Production Assistant and Cabaret Director at Forestburgh Playhouse (New York); Seasonal Assistant Production Manager at The Public Theater (NYC); and Museum Theater Manager at Plimoth Patuxet Museums (MA). For the past year, he has been a COVID Safety Manager on Broadway and is currently working on Kimberly Akimbo, A New Musical. He also is a freelance artist and a contributing critic for Theatrely.
He is interested in LGBTQ+ stories, unconventional musical theatre, using theatre to create a more just world.
